This was due to sheer negligence. They caused thousands of dollars of damage. We have provided receipts, invoices, and photos. We have been chasing them since December. They will NOT take responsibility. I have purchased furniture from DWR many times and the service has always been great.

Price

After waiting months for my order, received the wrong items from shipping company, XPO, who insisted I sign for the wrong items. Extremely rude when I refused to sign for the wrong items. Design Within Reach needs to vastly improve upon the level of customer service they provide. It is unreal how inadequate the customer service is when one considers the high end nature of this retailer. I didn't receive tracking information on any of the items I ordered. On one order I was sent the wrong item meanwhile another purchase hasn't shipped though the estimated time frame has come and gone.

DWR needs to improve their customer service

This time, there's no way I'm waiting 5 months for a lamp, when there are plenty of other online retailers selling the same lamp that will ship in 2 business days. Never ordering from their website again. Stop using Covid shipping delays as an excuse for your poor service, DWR. It's been 4 years and plenty of businesses have gotten their shipping back on track. Do not purchase ANYTHING from Design Within Reach.

Businesses

DWR shipping and logistics are abysmal. Every order from DWR has had errors. We orders this bed October 2021 with a 4 week estimated ship date. Didn’t deliver until the end of February 2022, and they didn’t ship the footboard. We have paid in full for a $3000+ Bed we cannot use and DWR has the gall to pend another $1000 charge for the replacement footboard.

DWR Exclusive

We pointed this out prior to ordering and we were assured that the right colors would be ordred and that the trays were included. When the order showed up both colors were wrong and there were no trays. When the trays arrived months later they were the wrong size and didn't fit. I placed the order for the mirror on August 14 with the 6-8 weeks delivery frame. Today on September 25 I was informed the product will arrive sometime in February 2024. This is really outrageous and unacceptable I would never waste my time and find another mirror somewhere else.

I hope I get it before the bill comes due. I tried to get them to return the rug without delivering it but they refused. So now I have to go through the same thing all over again.

The tragedy is we love the piece and quality, but customer service has been vague and slow to respond. I just got burned by Design Within Reach. Delivery of desk was scheduled for this afternoon. Spent the morning removing everything from my office, taking out my old desk, cleaning everything out to prepare for installation of new desk.

Last contact was a phone call and follow-up email to the store manager 31 days ago and they have still not responded. I purchased 4 Hoffman side chairs with cane seats and backs. I loved the comfort and look of these chairs. HOWEVER, after 4 years the cane began to break!

Frequent coordination with out of state design and engineering teams allowed for a fast tracked construction schedule.

But then I ordered a rug which I had to return. They IMMEDIATELY charged a restocking fee of the retail price, though I got it on sale, and the amount was very large. The refund has been excessively long in coming.

But when I received the confirmation email for my order, the 20% didn't apply. I tried reaching DWR, and at first the agent told me that it would be fixed and I would receive a refund and confirmation email for that. Tried contacting them again and this rude woman told me they couldn't do anything.

You may be waiting a long time for your items to arrive with no accurate info on when to expect it. I've had issues with multiple orders being delayed, and customer service giving false wait times. They say weeks, and then when after weeks go by and I check in on the shipping status, customer service then tells me it's actually months now. Last year, I waited 9 MONTHS for 2 throw pillows.

It later became a school, then dormitory-style housing for seminary students. In 1996, Rhett House Inn owners Steve and Marianne Harrison bought the two-story building and renovated it into 7 additional guest rooms, all with fireplaces, whirlpool baths and separate showers. 'The House of the Rising Sun': The Hit Rock Song With Folk Origins

house of the rising sun by

The earliest recorded versions date back to the 1930s, and it has since been covered by numerous artists in various styles. House of the Rising Sun is a timeless classic, and one of the most iconic songs in the history of rock music. Originally an old folk tune, this song has been interpreted and reimagined by various artists over the years. However, it was The Doors who truly brought it to life and made it their own. In these variations, the narrator is a woman bemoaning her return to prostitution. Male singers made it “the ruin of many a poor boy,” which transformed the title establishment into a gambling den.

The Modern Versions

The mystery deepens when you learn that there is a pub in Lowestoft called ‘The Rising Sun.’ Opened before 1964, I might add. A song that, when you try to get to the bottom of what it is all about and where it came from, asks more questions than it answers. The meaning behind “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals is one such song. If the music sounded almost supernatural, Burdon’s vocal gave the song its terrestrial heart, one rent in two by the loaded dice and lost bets. He tempers his performance, starting off low and with deadly serious intent to grab your attention.

More Songfacts:

The song became a hit in the '60s and continues to be recognizable even to casual music fans to this day. "The House of the Rising Sun" has been covered many times since The Animals' version by artists including Frijid Pink, Five Finger Death Punch, and notably, Dolly Parton. Parton's version was released in 1981 from her 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs album.

Behind the Album: Neil Young’s Polarizing ‘Trans’ and the Rift It Caused with His Record Label

house of the rising sun by

At the end of the Doors song "Touch Me," Jim Morrison chants, "Stronger than dirt!" The line is from an Ajax commercial where a white knight rides around destroying dirt. While there is no specific true story behind the song, House of the Rising Sun draws inspiration from the themes and experiences common in the world of addiction, regret, and lost opportunities. It speaks to the universal human experience of being drawn into a life of vice and the subsequent consequences that follow.

Other notable versions

Little did I know that this haunting melody would leave an everlasting impression on my soul. By the time the ’60s rolled around, the folk legend Dave Van Ronk included an intense take on “House of the Rising Sun” as a steady part of his live repertoire. His young acolyte Bob Dylan largely mimicked Van Ronk’s arrangement of the song and included it on his debut album.

Great Recordings

The combination of Jim Morrison’s powerful vocals, Ray Manzarek’s haunting organ, and the band’s signature psychedelic sound creates a mesmerizing experience for the listener. It's also a song beloved in the country music community due to its folk origins and notable country covers. Its haunting melody, powerful vocals, and deeply relatable lyrics have made “The House Of The Rising Sun” a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences today. Its inclusion in numerous films, television shows, and even adaptations by various artists only solidifies its enduring legacy.

The Meaning Behind The Song: House of the Rising Sun by Leadbelly

As many people over the years churned and moved and settled, the places that components of the song could have come from are nearly endless. Much like hundreds of other folk songs, the epicenter of House of the Rising Sun is lost to the past. It was a song that was passed from person to person and from one generation to the next. It’s earliest singers, the location of the house that so many had apparently spent their lives in sin and misery, and most everything else about the song is a mystery.

Both the Joan Baez and Dylan versions were included on their first albums, which were both very folk-oriented. I don’t know a single classic rock aficionado who doesn’t count ‘The House Of The Rising Sun’ by The Animals among their favorite tunes! This eerie, soulful song was released in 1964 during the height of the British invasion and it’s one that’s stood the test of time with use in movies and television since its release. Many have sung “House of the Rising Sun” before Eric Burdon took it on with the Animals, and many will sing it in the future. Its psychological insight and philosophical meaning are all too relevant for this song to be anything but timeless.

The Time Bob Dylan Stole Dave Van Ronk’s Arrangement for “House of the Rising Sun”

Leadbelly’s rendition undoubtedly popularized the song, but it has been covered by numerous artists over the years. One notable cover of “House of the Rising Sun” is The Animals’ 1964 version, which introduced the song to a whole new generation and became an international hit. Many believe that this points out to a brother in New Orleans, where the song was supposedly named after the occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant, which meant Rising Sun in French. Another popular theory goes that it was about a women’s prison in the city which had a gate that bore a rising sun motif (allegedly a reference to the “ball and chain” lyric in the song). It remains, without a doubt, one of the songs that shaped the 60s and, to some extent, shaped rock music. The use of light and shade and a progressive atmospheric build was innovative.

house of the rising sun by

The song has since been named number 122 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list and received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. The oldest recording of the song is a version called "Rising Sun Blues" by Tennessee artist Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, released in 1933. In 1938, ethnomusicologist, folklorist, and archivist Alan Lomax recorded a 16-year-old girl named Georgia Turner sing it in eastern Kentucky.

Parton's remake reached number 14 on the US country singles chart and crossed over to the pop charts, where it reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100; it also reached number 30 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Parton has occasionally performed the song live, including on her 1987–88 television show, in an episode taped in New Orleans. White is also credited with having written new words and music that have subsequently been popularized in the versions made by many other later artists. Notable folk singer Clarence Ashley actually did make an earlier recording of the same song in 1933, where his version is definitively in the bluegrass style. Clarence had said that he learned the song from his grandfather, meaning the song’s origins can be dated to considerably older than 1933. What is interesting is that, while both Ashley and Turner come from the Appalachia region, Clarence was from Tennessee and Georgia was from Kentucky.

The song serves as a cautionary tale, exploring the consequences of making sinful choices. This is a song that is instantly recognized by those first seven or eight guitar notes. And it is a song that has become more than special in the history of Rock and Blues Music. It is a great song for them to perform, but it wasn’t the only one that raised the roof. I suppose to an extent, that will depend on whether it is a man or a woman singing it. However, there is a major theme in “House of the Rising Sun” that is common to just about all versions.

In an interview for the documentary No Direction Home, Van Ronk said that he was intending to record the song and that Dylan copied his version. The song tells the haunting tale of a person’s downfall and subsequent ruin in the infamous House of the Rising Sun. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a life consumed by vice, sin, and despair. It speaks of a place of ill repute, a den of iniquity where the protagonist’s life takes a turn for the worse.

The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s, but probably has its roots in traditional English folk song. Johnny Cash never performed this song, it was a cover artist named "The Ghost of Johnny Cash" (real name David Radcliffe). Colombian band Los Speakers covered the song under the title "La Casa del Sol Naciente", in their 1965 album of the same name. "House of the Rising Sun" was not included on any of the group's British albums, but it was reissued as a single twice in subsequent decades, charting both times, reaching number 25 in 1972 and number 11 in 1982.

While the general narrative centers around a downward spiral into vice and ruin, interpretations of the song’s meaning can vary. Some suggest that it serves as a metaphor for the cyclic nature of life or the hardships faced by women in society. First, there was that iconic guitar arpeggio to start the song that every learning guitarist tried to play but couldn’t.

The Meaning Behind The Song: House of the Rising Sun by The Doors

house of the rising sun by

As a popular folk song, the oldest record of “House of the Rising Sun” in reference to a song was 1905, and it was first recorded in 1933 by an Appalachian group. Other early recordings include Woody Guthrie’s version from 1941 and Bob Dylan in 1961. The version by the Animals, however, is by far the most popular, and Dylan is often annoyed when it is assumed that he covered that song from them. Apart from The Doors, several notable artists have covered House of the Rising Sun.

The Meaning Behind The Song: House of the Rising Sun by Leadbelly

The Rising Sun in the song serves as a metaphorical representation of a place of corruption and moral decay. It symbolizes the protagonist’s descent into a life of vice and self-destruction. The Rising Sun can also be seen as a warning, showcasing the consequences of one’s actions and the potential for redemption. "House of the Rising Sun" became the Animals' signature song and remains one of the most iconic they have ever released. "The House of the Rising Sun" Lyrics (The Animals Version)

So, we shouldn’t be surprised to find references to ‘The Rising Sun.’ It is a common name for an English pub even today. Pubs of two to three hundred years ago were often “houses of ill-repute.” The song was likely carried to America by immigrants who performed it there, from whence local names and traditions became intertwined. The song was first recorded in 1933 by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster under the title “Rising Sun Blues.” In response to a question about the song’s origins, Ashley said that his grandfather had taught it to him. Grandfather Enoch was married at the time of the American Civil war, which places the timeframe we are looking at in context.

Q: What other artists have covered House of the Rising Sun?

While deeply rooted in American folk music, “House of the Rising Sun” has transcended its origins and influenced various music genres. Its haunting melody and timeless appeal have inspired artists in rock, blues, and even heavy metal to incorporate or reinterpret elements of the song in their own works. Although the date and author of the song are unknown, some musicologists have said that it resembled ballads of the 16th century, and could very easily have derived from one of that time.

The Meaning Behind “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals

In this version, Parton sings from the perspective of a woman who works as a sex worker at the house of the rising sun and cautions other women about following in her footsteps. Parton's version reached No. 14 on the Country charts and crossed over to the Pop Charts, landing at No. 77 on the Hot 100 and No. 33 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Parton also performed the song on an episode of her variety show, Dolly, in New Orleans. As records became more popular, so did recordings of the House of the Rising Sun. Instead of chance hearing-and-remembering by hand fulls of troubadours, records were common and fairly easy to come by.

House of the Rising Sun played a significant role in establishing The Doors as one of the leading bands of their time. It showcased their musical versatility and ability to put a fresh spin on a traditional song. The Doors’ version became one of their signature songs and helped solidify their place in rock music history. The Doors’ rendition of House of the Rising Sun showcases the band’s unique sound and their ability to infuse their own emotions into a timeless folk song.

Here, we catch a glimpse of the troubled life the narrator has experienced, tainted by his father’s vices and the hardships of his childhood. Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan played “House of the Rising Sun” in coffeehouses. Burdon himself picked the song up from the English folk scene, and the Animals first covered the slow, sinister tune when they opened for Chuck Berry because they knew they “couldn’t outrock” the guitar great. There were only two singers that could do that and make it work so well. “House of the Rising Sun” went to #1 on both sides of the Atlantic and was the first major Folk-Rock success.

The song touches on universal themes and emotions that resonate with listeners across generations. Its haunting atmosphere and powerful vocals make it a standout track that continues to captivate audiences to this day. The Doors’ rendition of House of the Rising Sun took the original folk song and transformed it into a psychedelic rock masterpiece.

Perhaps this mystery, along with the somewhat anonymous lyrics and spooky minor chords, is part of what has continued to intrigue so many thousands and millions over the years. The Animals may have given "The House of the Rising Sun" international fame, but the song's life started long before Eric Burdon first heard it performed by singer Johnny Handle in a Newcastle, England club. In fact, no one definitively knows where the song came from or who wrote it, but historians do know it began as a traditional folk song. Some theorize that a form of the song originated as an English folk song and slowly made its way to America, but regardless of where it came from, it started gaining popularity in the Appalachian region of the US. The Animals' version of the American folk song is considered one of the 20th century’s British pop classics. While the original version was sung in the character of a woman led into a life of degradation, the Animals' version is told from the view of a young man who follows his father into alcoholism and gambling ruin.

Originally released by the British rock band The Animals in 1964, “The House Of The Rising Sun” quickly captured the hearts of many music lovers around the world. However, what makes this song truly exceptional is its rich history and the profound emotions it evokes through its lyrics. Only the band’s organist, Alan Price, was given credit for arranging the track as the record company said that there wasn’t enough room to include all the members as arrangers.

There is a house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun,It’s been the ruin of many poor girl, and me, O God, for one. Beyond its presence in films and TV shows, “House of the Rising Sun” has become a staple in popular culture. Its use in commercials, video games, and even as a part of political campaigns attests to its widespread recognition and status as a cultural touchstone. It is interesting how Burdon didn’t perform the song for a long time after the Animals split, calling it an “embarrassment”.

He has since made peace with it, however, and has revisited it on various occasions in different styles. But he still goes and knows that the temptations of the place are like a ball and chain that he is condemned to carry. However, it seems more likely it is a metaphor for his addictions to drinking and gambling. He is tempted not to go but hasn’t got the willpower to say no, almost like he has given up on himself. In that version, you will find a similar tune and words, with Lowestoft, a seaside town in the UK, replacing New Orleans.
