The Last House on Needless Street Catriona Ward

Without spoiling things, I wasn’t completely satisfied with the conclusion of the novel for the simple reason that a story should really only have one Norman Bates, and Last House has several, possibly stressing the limits of verisimilitude for some readers. Having multiple characters prove deeply unreliable as a result of their mental trauma feels like painting outside of the lines. It’s the kind of audacious triple-twist that I feel has been popular ever since Gillian Flynn rose to fame, though few authors, including Catriona Ward, do it quite as well.

The Last Bookstore

The novel combines elements of Gothic literature with the thriller genre to create a claustrophobic world where the past is never far from the present, and nothing is truly as it seems. Fear in the dark is what powered her 2015 gothic horror debut, Rawblood, the follow-up Little Eve, and now her breakout third book, The Last House on Needless Street, published on 18 March. Buzz has been building for months around a dark, audacious highwire act of a novel that can be only tentatively described for risk of giving too much away. Whereas Ward’s previous novels were historical chillers set in remote corners of Britain, featuring young women traumatised by cursed families and social oppression, the new book looks at first like a contemporary American thriller. There are horrors hidden in a rundown house on the edge of a forest; a spate of disappearing children; a vulnerable woman searching for answers. Ward introduces us to Ted, a bizarre, childlike loner who lives with his daughter Lauren and cat Olivia – and then pulls the rug, repeatedly, from under the reader’s feet.

site categories

Every character, setting, and arc is an askew, asymmetrical thing that shuffles at the edge of the reader’s perception showing a side that does not match its shadow. This is the unreliable narrator taken from element to thesis, and throughout my time with the novel I felt a deep discomfort which underpins all of the events that play out on the pages. When Ted falls asleep, Olivia manages to control her and Lauren’s body. She stabs Ted, only to discover that she and Lauren are other personalities inhabiting Ted’s body. The snakebite weakened her, but Dee is ready to take revenge. However, a little girl’s voice comes from Ted’s mouth, telling her that Ted is not a monster.

Olivia goes into her crate, a broken chest freezer with air holes drilled into it. She loves a tabby cat that she spies on through the peepholes in the plyboard that covers all the windows in the house. She is also religious, frequently turning to the Bible for answers to questions in her life. Ever since then, they have been connected by a golden cord, which only Olivia can see.

There are also the usual lights going on and off and mysterious footsteps. Several ghosts supposedly haunt the bridge, including possibly a worker who fell into the concrete during construction. The 1906 Alexandria, now low-income apartments, has been both one of the fanciest joints in Downtown and a rundown flophouse. Several dancers are said to haunt the second-floor ballroom, an angry teenager hangs around Charlie Chaplin's old suite, and Rudolph Valentino apparently leaves the Knickerbocker occasionally and visits his old 12th-floor suite.

Ted’s date fails because he cannot get up the courage to approach the woman he lured to a nearby bar. The city sends bulldozers and tractors to the forest behind Ted’s house to create new rest areas. They are dangerously close to where Ted buried his “gods” (pieces of his mother’s remains and her treasured possessions); he frantically moves them to a new spot that night. Dee attempts to follow him, but she retreats due to her fear of snakes. I experienced a monumental life event whilst reading Last House–the birth of my first child–and thus I did something I never do and read several reviews of the book before sitting down to write my own. I wanted to ensure I hadn’t missed some crucial detail, some pivotal element, some early plot point that my brain may not have absorbed during the wee hours spent sleepless on a hospital room’s couch under COVID quarantine. Never have I witnessed so many professional journalists collectively struggle to say something resonant about a book, to come up with an incisive thought that wasn’t some watered-down cliché or horror novel platitude. The Last House on Needless Street is a difficult title to digest, and I fear many readers will find it unsatisfying once they’ve swallowed (or purged, as may be the case) what lies between its covers.

The novel explores themes of trauma, grief, and the blurred lines between reality and imagination, effectively immersing readers in the psychological depths of its characters. One of the book’s many surprises is that it is partly narrated by Olivia, a fastidious, deeply religious feline who refers to humans as “teds” and gives us an exterior perspective on her unreliable owner. (“Ted is not a very clean ted. His bathroom does not look like the bathrooms on TV.”) Olivia, Ward remarks, owes something to David Sedaris; she provides humorous respite from the otherwise harrowing narrative.

She finds evidence of a little girl’s presence and becomes doubly convinced that Ted is hiding Lulu. She makes the mistake of refitting the plyboard over the kitchen window with new nails. Dee tries to track Lulu’s kidnapper, but she has little luck. Detective Karen had helped her search, but after Dee confronted an innocent man in Oregon, Karen became more reticent. Dee manages to track Ted down thanks to a cruel rich man. She introduces herself and even gets Ted to let her in under the pretense of using his bathroom.

Thanks to this revelation, the police recover Lulu’s body and close the case. Ted lives in the shadow of his deceased mother’s influence, sometimes feeling her presence even though she is long dead. He visits a dubious psychologist, whom he calls the “bug man,” to try to help him deal with Lauren’s psychological conditions.

Review: 'The Last House on Needless Street,' by Catriona Ward : NPR

the last house on needless street

Dan Aykroyd was living here when he got the idea for Ghostbusters—he says he was inspired by the house’s extreme hauntedness (door locking, lights going on and off, a piano playing itself). The ghosts could be former occupants “Mama” Cass Elliot or Natalie Wood. Griffith Park is all kinds of haunted, dating back supposedly to the nineteenth century, when owner Don Antonio Feliz left the land to one Don Antonio Coronel instead of to his niece, Dona Petronilla Feliz. It’s said that industrialist and eventual owner Griffith J. Griffith donated the property to the city to rid himself of the tainted land (the ostriches on his ostrich farm there apparently stampeded at night). The land is supposedly haunted by Don Antonio Feliz, Dona Petronilla, Griffith J. Griffith, a young girl, and several others, as well as some kind of humanoid beast.

Olivia begins being plagued by a high-pitched noise. The book embraces many of the most familiar aspects of the horror genre, but it also counts on its readers to possess a shared understanding of its common tropes and signifiers, and uses those assumptions to subvert many of their preexisting expectations. The grand old department store (now a Southwest Law School building) is supposedly haunted by a little girl who was killed in an elevator shaft.

Opening with a massacre, it intertwines the fates of two teenage girls – one the killer, one the survivor. The horror here arises from the sadistic control exerted by the damaged patriarch, who creates a toxic family that is also a prison. As soon as you crack open Catriona Ward's The Last House on Needless Street, you know something's very wrong. More than biting into a nice apple and finding a worm, this book is like unexpectedly stepping on the worm barefoot, only to find out the worm isn't a worm — and I mean that in the best way possible. Horror fiction can scare readers, make them anxious, or upset their stomachs, but the most powerful narratives in the genre manage to create an unshakable sense of unease, and that's exactly what this novel does.

Depressed by her lack of success, she jumped from the Hollywood Sign’s “H” to her death in September 1932. People have reported seeing a woman near the sign matching Entwistle’s description and dressed in period clothes; some people say they’ve seen a female figure actually making the jump. “The inclusion of supernatural elements alongside the psychological aspects adds a fascinating layer to Ward’s already compelling narrative.” – Noted Horror Fiction Author. While the author’s specific inspirations may not be known, Ward’s talent for crafting psychological thrillers likely drew from a variety of influences within the genre. Lauren is Ted’s daughter, and her character serves as a catalyst for the unfolding events.

Ted Bannerman lives alone with his cat Olivia in a dilapidated, boarded up house at the end of a cul-de-sac. He's unemployed, drinks a lot, and suffers from a few undiagnosed mental health problems. His daughter Lauren comes to visit from time to time, but they never go out when she does, and their relationship is always tense and often violent. When a woman named Dee moves into the abandoned house next door while on her quest to find her sister, who was kidnapped years ago, Ted's life begins to spiral into chaos.

The basement, which is filled with tunnels, is supposedly haunted by a couple of mobsters, at least one of whom also likes to visit the Comedy Store. “The Last House On Needless Street” prompts readers to contemplate the depths of the human psyche, the consequences of trauma, and the blurred lines between reality and imagination. The novel invites readers to interpret its events on multiple levels, leaving room for metaphorical interpretations that reflect deeper themes and messages.

As she points out in an afterword, Dennis Nilsen’s dog, Bleep, “was the only creature he could be said to have had any functional relationship with”. Ted finds her pretty pebble on the path where Dee had dropped it years before. The pain lets the personality of Little Teddy take over. Little Teddy witnessed their mother enter the neighbor’s house with a suitcase before she hanged herself.

Ted, an avid lover of birds, discovers that someone placed glue traps on all of the bird feeders in his yard. Ted is forced to gather up all the birds and kill them to end their suffering. Ted is distraught by the death of the birds, and he begins a list of suspects. He’s afraid that if he does not record himself, he will disappear. Ted spends the day with his daughter, Lauren, who pedals around the house on her pink bicycle. Written and directed by Adam Berardi, The Last House on the Street is a horror comedy film that follows the story of two girls who decide to move to a new town and rent a flat.

"The buzz...is real. I've read it and was blown away. It's a true nerve-shredder that keeps its mind-blowing secrets to the very end." —Stephen KingWinner of the British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel! STARRED reviews from Library Journal and Publishers Weekly! Named one of the "50 Best Horror Books of All Time" by Esquire! Named one of the 50 best horror books of all time by Esquire, The Last House on Needless Street (2021) is a psychological thriller by acclaimed author Catriona Ward. Ward is the first woman to win the August Derleth Award for Best Horror twice, for her novels Rawblood and Little Eve, the latter of which also won the Shirley Jackson award for best novel.

Ward is a talented storyteller, and she shows that here. “It would be a bad book if I wasn’t afraid of it,” she says, explaining that there’s actually an important emotional element involved in telling and reading stories about our fears, of both the real and the fictional variety. While the novel blurs the boundaries between reality and the supernatural, the haunting nature of the house is left open to interpretation, adding to the overall sense of unease.

Everything seems to be going normal but soon, they start to experience weird and strange things which seem to be connected to the two boys. Thus, begins a game of cat and mouse as they try to outrun and get rid of whoever is following them. Chavez Ravine is haunted by more than just the eerie specter of displaced poor people—it’s also said to have one or two actual ghosts, as well as a spooky mist.

There’s also a cold spot in the Blossom Room (the first home of the Oscars), near where a dapperly-dressed ’30s-era man is said to hang around. “The Last House On Needless Street delves into the darkest corners of trauma, offering a thought-provoking exploration of its lasting effects.” – Esteemed Psychologist. While the ending provides closure to the primary storyline, there may be some unanswered questions, allowing readers to interpret certain aspects for themselves.

In the most basic sense, The Last House on Needless Street follows the story of Ted, a lonely man who lives in a boarded up house (on Needless Street, naturally) with his 12 year old daughter, Lauren, and his cat, Olivia. Children have been going missing at a nearby lake for some time and a woman named Dee, whose sister disappeared there some years prior, has convinced herself that Ted had something to do with it. For anyone who was willing and able to isolate during the pandemic, the setting of Last House on Needless Street will feel thematically familiar. The characters spend a great deal of time alone, rarely interacting with each other and typically contacting outsiders via the phone or in arranged meetings. It is very much a novel for our times, and this lends to its tension; any one of us could easily have wound up in another house on Needless Street, passing time no better than Ted and Dee do.

The oldest IHOP is across the street from the oldest Big Boy

The beautiful marriage of IHOP and Applebee's happened in 2007 when IHOP paid $2.1 billion to acquire the other chain. Analysts at the time thought it was a risky move, what with soaring operating costs in the restaurant sector and consumers' petty concerns about high gas prices (oh consumers of the past, if only you knew what lay ahead). The purchase was part of IHOP's master plan to take over the chain restaurant universe — just kidding, but it was part of their plan to transform their business into a franchise system.

Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. IHOP does provide information online about which of its menu items contain the top eight food allergens (plus gluten and sulfites), but these are not included on in-person restaurant menus. The chain also cannot guarantee any menu item will be completely free of allergens since all food is prepared in a single kitchen. Among the breakfast choices for kids, the Funny Face pancakes may be popular.

“People come into IHOP because they want to have fun experiences and we are focused on rewarding existing and new guests for spending time together with us,” she said. Well, perhaps no other campaign in the history of marketing has inspired such collective confusion. Legend says Slenderman loves pancakes, but that's probably the only link between IHOP and horror movies you've ever pondered.

According to Grimm, if you need a little help to create a slick surface, use a paper towel to rub a small amount of Crisco on your cold pan. Using butter, she explained, might produce a pancake with "that webbed, lacy look, instead of a uniformly golden brown" surface we've come to expect from IHOP. The wooden structure was first built in 1888 but has been destroyed twice in its lifetime, once in 1890 by rough seas and, after it was rebuilt, again in 1902. “Chef Rachel saw smoke coming up from underneath the pier, behind the old Ruby’s building," Waite said. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee.

The so-called smog-hog was designed to remove all odors before they had a chance to escape, and it sounds like a good plan, right? The feud didn't go away, though, and it wasn't long before those same neighbors were now complaining because IHOP's smog-hog was all but deafening. Any IHOP connoisseur will appreciate a bit of ancient IHOP history, so let's talk about that very first location.

The 55+ grilled tilapia dinner with a side of broccoli and rice contains just 310 calories, 6g fat, 1g saturated fat, 39g carbohydrates, and 1,300mg sodium—but still offers 25g protein. The ham and egg melt, while high in sodium, is the most nutritious option in this part of the menu. In total, it provides 780 calories, 44g fat, 16g saturated fat, 59g carbohydrates, 41g protein, and 2,220mg sodium. Several of the burger options contain more than 1,000 calories. The mega monster cheeseburger has 1,140 calories, 81g fat, 30g saturated fat, 44g carbohydrates, 57g protein, and 3,130mg sodium.

Whether it's a short stack or a full stack, there's a uniformity there that you can never seem to achieve with your ladles full of batter at home. Maybe one ends up a silver dollar, and the next takes over the whole pan, but they're certainly never all the same size. For starters, that griddle is set to a very specific temperature — 350 degrees to be exact — and, believe it or not, it is not slicked with oil or butter, or any other fat, for that matter. These pancake-making techniques come courtesy of Marie Grimm, IHOP's vice president of culinary innovation, who spilled the company's secrets to Delish. We can only assume that a griddle that requires absolutely zero fat but remains a surface that pancakes don't stick like glue to must be highly seasoned from years of use. If you don't have that confidence in your own griddle, there's still hope.

The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting.

But a towering stack of light, fluffy pancakes couldn't possibly be offensive, you say? Well, the social media team at IHOP managed to offend plenty of people with their 2019 Mother's Day tweet which featured — you guessed it — a stack of pancakes. You're probably not pulling up to IHOP with any delusion that you're going to be ordering a superfood kale salad with a side of quinoa and a tall glass of freshly pressed green juice.

20 minutes after the appetizers came we started to receive our meals two at a time in 15 increments. Did I mention that it took 35 minutes to get a waffle, never did the waitress come back to see if we wanted anything to drink while we were there for an hour and a half, only the first two orders were hot. Those who like their pancakes served with a side of nostalgia will find a happy home at The Original Pantry Café. This no-fuss 24/7 diner opened back in 1924, and has probably been serving these straightforward buttermilk pancakes since its opening day.

“I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. On IHOP’s omelettes menu section, you’ll find about a half dozen options that all start with eggs. They offer plenty of protein and some vitamin D in a low-calorie package. Of course, you can't have pancakes and syrup without something to wash it down, and that translates to 100 million cups of coffee and 14 million gallons of orange juice that get served along with the breakfast staple. Most of the breakfasts on the menu come with a side of those famous flapjacks, meaning that just about every order counts towards that huge yearly tally. It probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the International House of Pancakes' most popular menu item is...

They're sweet, they're delicious, and no one is ever going to try to pretend they're good for you (or natural), but that's part of what makes them so good. Let's say you're fine with IHOP's "old fashioned" syrup, and you couldn't care less that it's not the real deal tapped from the trees of Vermont. In fact, you prefer their not-so-real syrup, even though its ingredient list boasts only two items you can firmly stand behind, and they happen to be water and salt. Never mind that corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup are the first and second ingredients...

It's also going to give the eggs a bit more structure, meaning it's going to fill you up. And last but not least, that batter will provide just a hint of sweetness to the overall flavor of the dish. Omelette purists might turn up their noses, but there's no denying that IHOP's pancake batter makes their iteration of another breakfast staple unique.

The addition of fried chicken means this dish provides 1.030 calories, 55g fat, 14g saturated fat, 92g carbohydrates, 23g protein, and 2,080mg sodium. Adding eggs and meat to waffles also adds calories and fat, at least 120 calories for eggs and 60 calories for meat options. IHOP's sides offer a varied mix of items to accompany breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

“One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. transatlantic cruise one way

While not a bargain by any means, this 14-night itinerary aboard the 750-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Splendor is all-inclusive. Business-class airfare, transfers, top-notch cuisine, unlimited beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi and most shore excursions are all included in the fare. They will spend six days crossing the Atlantic and call on Madeira and then overnight in Barcelona. Then, they will visit the French ports of Sete and Marseille, followed by Monte Carlo, Monaco, and another overnight in Livorno, Italy (gateway to Florence). If you prefer to cross the Atlantic in spring 2025, take sister Edge Class ship Celebrity Apex, which carries 2,910 passengers.

But if you prefer leisurely, lazy days, then a transoceanic repositioning cruise might be your ticket to utopia. This huge stretch of time is a great opportunity to crack open books you've been meaning to read, launch into a knitting project or finally have time for daily workouts. The good news is you can book a repositioning cruise nearly six months out of the year, spanning mid-spring and mid-fall months, which are the cruise lines' shoulder seasons. Your origin and destination cities — or, in cruise-speak, embarkation and disembarkation ports — will not be the same. You might sail out of Florida and arrive in Barcelona or Southampton, England, allowing you to explore two continents on one vacation.

In the opposite direction, from Fort Lauderdale to Lisbon, you’ll stop at Bermuda, the Azores, and Porto, Portugal. Travelers looking to make connections with like minded adults will find longer cruises the perfect way to do it. We've hosted the famous and fabulous on this iconic crossing for almost 180 years, and now invite you to share in that timeless sense of occasion and create your own history. An advantage of repositionings is the price, which is often cheaper than what you'd pay for a round-trip sailing of the same length or which has more port days built into the schedule. However, the cost of the potentially expensive one-way or open-jaw flights needed before and after a repositioning cruise could eat up most of the money you'd save by booking that type of voyage. When you book a repositioning cruise, you'll likely be on board for at least two weeks, allowing enough time for the ship to sail between where it's currently based and its new home port. Sometimes the voyage can be even longer, and it's likely you won't have more than five or six port stops during that time. Some cruise lines organize themed sailings or invite guest lecturers on board for extra sea day activities. Due to increased cruise itineraries in the Middle East and Asia over the last decade, you might also find a repositioning cruise departing or returning to either of those regions.

From breathtaking sailings around Alaska to fun-filled, island-hopping journeys in the Caribbean, there are dozens of unforgettable types of cruises you should experience at least once. Crossings between Europe and South America promise leisurely days to unwind by the pool or in The Spa, and to while away evenings indulging in award-winning dining and dazzling entertainment. In South America, you’ll trace the verdant east coast, with time in seductive Rio de Janeiro, elegant Montevideo, and sultry Buenos Aires, home of the tango, and excellent steaks. Sail on a transatlantic voyage from Barcelona, Rome, Lisbon, or Southampton to Florida. En route, you’ll stop at sub-tropical Bermuda, filled with pretty villages and palm-fringed beaches. In Ponta Delgada in the volcanic Azores, you can explore blue-green crater lakes, admire colorful Portuguese colonial architecture, and experience some of the world’s most exciting whale watching.

The 930-passenger Viking Sea is an adults-only ship featuring a sleek Scandinavian design. Guests aboard Viking Sea's Spain to West Indies sailing will cross the Atlantic from Barcelona to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship will call on the Spanish coastal cities of Valencia and Cadiz, Funchal on the scenic Portuguese island of Madeira, and Phillipsburg on the beach-rimmed Dutch-Caribbean island of St. Martin. A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and traditional afternoon tea.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year. At the same time, some people feel uneasy about being at sea for such a long period without the opportunity to access land. This is especially true for people who get seasick after a prolonged period on the water. The first week takes in the beauty of Rome, Tuscany (from Livorno) and Cinque Terre (from La Spezia). Then it's on to Nice and Toulon in France and Palamos, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain.

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey across the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean aboard our spectacular repositioning cruises. Sail from one continent to another on an award-winning ship, and experience unrivaled luxury, service, and entertainment as it relocates from one region of the world to another. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. The only time you don't need a passport to cruise is if you're booked on a closed-loop sailing — a voyage that departs from and returns to the same port within the U.S. Since repositioning cruises don't leave from and return to the same port, the exception won't apply, and you'll need a passport in order to board the ship.
